Have you ever felt caught in between two worlds? Two ways of being?
I’ll go ahead and say yes. We have all experienced a scenario like this, seeing two sides of a situation and relating to them both. Desiring both. Not knowing what choice to make, which “being” to be.
Which job should you take, the one that offers financial security or the one that offers a sense of purpose? Which partner should you choose, the one that excites your body or your mind?
What is the right choice?!
Boy have I been there. Stuck in the middle of trying to make the “right” choice whishing someone would just tell me what the heck to do!
These choices are hard because different parts of us have different needs and values. What makes everything so complicated is that we tend to see our duality as opposing rather than equal and complementary.
The duality of our experience
We come into this world with two sides, our human side that will come to end one day, and our soul that will continue on.
Our humanness puts priority on the experiences that will keep us safe and alive; food, shelter, money. Survival and stability by fitting into societal norms and values, doing what is right vs what is wrong. Our humanness values structure.
On the contrary, our soul puts priority on experiences that offer joy, passion, and wonder. Open to the full spectrum of life’s experience, knowing that there are no wrong turns or wrong answers on an endless journey of growth and learning.
While the two sides of our being have seemingly competing missions, our true mission is to find balance between them. The creation of a symbiotic relationship between the mission of the body and the mission of the soul.
In this intersection lives the flow of existence we all crave. Something we have all experienced and seek to hold on to.
Moving forward
To live in the experience of balanced duality (aka: alignment), it is our responsibility to stay present. To be aware of what feels right to our soul and to our body. Honoring the body’s mission to stay alive and feel secure and the soul’s mission to experience the wide range of emotion life has to offer.
Sometimes the needs of our humanness will take priority and we will choose the job that offers financial security. Sometimes the needs of our soul will take priority and we will choose a partner that offers a passionate, emotional experience.
There is no right or wrong. Whatever the decision, stay present. Allow the experience to be what you need it to be and move on when it is time to move on.
I have come to realize through my spiritual growth journey, including Reiki, that inner peace comes when we honor the full spectrum of our being. Our light and our dark. Our creativity and our logic. Our fear and our ability to trust. Our need for stability and our need for chaos. Our need for play and for purpose. Our need to be human and our need to honor our soul.
There is no reason to compete with yourself. One part of you is no more or less valuable than the other.
