So, I failed at meditating today.
My mind just wouldn’t stop. Conversations I had with people or need to have with people, ideas that I’m contemplating, all of it just rushed in.
Even when I politely told these thoughts, “Not now,” they didn’t listen.
After a few minutes, I realized they weren’t going to give up. I gave in and decided to push my sit to later in the day, after I address the things that are apparently on my mind.
Meditation is just like anything else. Some days you sail through and it’s great. Other days, it doesn’t work out, so you try again later.
Just because I didn’t have a good practice today doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on meditation all together, just like I wouldn’t give up on a project or an idea that hit a bump. It also doesn’t mean that I didn’t get anything out of it. I mean, it gave me the idea for this post, right?
One bad day, one bad practice, one mistake doesn’t define your ability to do something. And chances are, you got something out of that perceived failure, so take a second look from a different perspective.
If you failed at something today too, it’ll be ok. Release your expectations and your judgments, and like Dory, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.
